Word of the Week

Found this one in a list of forgotten English words. Of immediate use at the gaming table and/or in situations involving self-described "grogs".

Grog-blossom: A carbuncle, or pimple in the face, caused by drinking.

Definition taken from The 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, originally by Francis Grose.

  1. Sounds like gin blossoms, which, in addition to the name of a rock band, means the red nose from broken capillaries caused by excessive drinking

  2. Need ideas for fictional foods and drinks? Look no further: alcohol is distilled from the grog blossom, bread comes from the bread plant and the ham-fisted always have a meal to hand.

  3. I have a nice little modern revised edition called "Lobcocks and Fartleberries: 18th-Century Insults to confound Your Foes." Lots of fun.
